Download link: (Newest version, Version 1.3)

[ 0 downloads so far ]

       About this theme:

Inspired from the "Fallout" games, this theme comprises of one boot image, one "Fallout" themed clock, 19 customized mouse pointers, 9 custom drive icons, 9 Windows system icons, 2 sound files - start Windows and Log off -, one Log On wallpaper, 1 display wallpaper and quite a few sillypapers. The wallpapers come in two resolutions, for wide screen and super wide screen monitors, respectively  1920x1080 px and 3840x1200 px.

If you like this theme, don't hesitate to leave a comment, and, why not, tip to buy me a coffee Make sure that you check out all my other skins, the software, subtitles, etc.

Also, don't forget to check out the "Fallout" Vlc Media Player skin

       Improvements since the last version:

  - Better compression - The "fallout_windows_theme_v1.3.zip" file has now only 38.8MB, compared to 71.3 MB of the previous version.

  - The wallpapers have a higher compression, which translates in less danger not to be recognized by old systems, and also less occupied memory.

  - Some changes and clarifications in the "Installation readme" files.

  - Minor aesthetic and bug/glitches related work.

       The "Wasteland Adventurer's League":

                 NAME:                     STATUS:

To join the "Wasteland Adventurer's League", you have to either find and crack the easter egg inside the "Pip-boy 3000" Vlc Media Player skin, or complete the Nuka Cola Challenge from the mentioned skin. Finding and cracking the easter egg will earn you a "Novice" membership, completing the Nuka Cola Challenge will make you a "Senior" member, while successfully doing both of them will bring you the title of "Knight" of "Wasteland Adventurer's League".

       Installation:

After downloading the archived file - "fallout_windows_theme_v1.3.zip " -, unpack the archive and copy the all the folders and files on your hard drive. Follow the respective instructions from this page to install each element.

Note that the installation instructions are more or less for Windows 11. I am trying to make them general, but some settings may slightly differ.

       The Boot Screen:

The Boot Screen is the image displayed while Windows is loading up. By default, that is a Windows logo, or, depending on the BIOS settings, the motherboard's logo.

To change the default logo, first you might have disable "Secure boot" in BIOS, and you have to make sure the motherboard's logo is not displayed by default. To do this, in BIOS, go to "Advanced Settings", then select "Boot" and make sure that "Full screen logo display" is disabled.

Once you've done that, you are ready to install the custom boot screen. And you can do that by using a third-party application, called "HackBGRT", included in the downloaded archive.

Go into the "HackBGRT" folder, and start "setup.exe". From the presented options, select "install" by pressing "i". Some text file will open, but you can close it. Then the application will open the "splash.bmp" file in "Paint". Select "Save as...",select "BMP picture" and then go to the "A:\" drive and save it, overwriting the existent "splash.bmp" file (if existent). Close "Paint", then press any key to close "HackBGRT".

There is a downside that I personally noted with the custom boot logo, namely that after a more serious Windows update, the system reverts to the Windows logo. Then you have to reinstall the custom logo, following the aforementioned steps.

         The customized "Fallout" Clock:

The Clock used is a widget of the "Rainmeter" application, application which is supplied in the archived theme file. To install this clock, you have to install "Rainmeter" first, if not already installed.

In order to install "Rainmeter" start the "Rainmeter-4.5.18.exe" application, and follow the onscreen instructions. Just make sure to set it to start at windows startup.

Once "Rainmeter" is installed, it is time to add the clock. Double click the "Fallout-clock.rmskin" file (just downloaded), and select "install" when asked by the Rainmeter Installer. Then right click "Rainmeter" in the notification area (bottom-right corner of the screen) and you'll see a folder named "fc". Double click it, then click "Clock.fallout-AM-PM.ini" and then click "Load" in the upper-right area of the manager. Close the manager screen, and then move your clock in the desired position on the screen.

There are 19 customized mouse pointers ... well, actually just 15, as 4 of them are the lighter version of some. You can see how they look in the picture above.

To install these pointers, go into your Windows settings and look for the "Bluetooth & Devices" menu. Open it, and find "Mouse". Upon selection, go to "Additional mouse settings" and you will see a "Mouse Properties" window opening up. If you're not on Windows 11, the goal is to open the "Mouse Properties" window. Select the "Pointers" tab, and here you can change the pointers with the custom ones.

        The customized Drive Icons:

There are 9 customized icons for 9 types of drives: For the System drive, for the Documents drive, for the Programs and Apps drive, for the Working drive, for the Games drive, for the Media drive, for the Installation Kits drive, for the Downloads drive and for the Optical drive (CD,DVD or BluRay), icons that, once installed, will replace the, let's face it, boring images displayed as standard. But, to install them, we have to do a bit of work. Don't worry, I will guide you step by step throughout the entire process.

First, you have to find the Registry Editor ("regedit.exe", right click it and select "Run as Administrator". Once inside, navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons". If you don't have a "DriveIcons" key, right click on the "Explorer" key, select "New" then select "Key", and name it "DriveIcons". If you don't already have the desired drive key (i.e. D, C, F, etc), right click on the "DriveIcons" key, select "New" then select "Key" and name it as the desired drive letter. If you do not have a "DefaultIcon" subkey, right click on the drive letter key, select "New" then select "Key" and name it "DefaultIcon". In the right pane of "DefaultIcon" double click the "(Default)" string value, and type the full path of the icon you want to use to represent this drive. Repeat these steps for all the desired drives.

        The customized System Icons:

There are 9 customized icons: 4 desktop icons - Recycle bin empty, Recycle bin full, My computer and My documents, and 5 system icons - Cloud (or OneDrive), the default folder icon, the Desktop icon, the Network icon and the shortcut overlay icon. To display these icons, make sure that the "Always show Icons, never thumbnails" option is selected in your view settings.

Some of these icons must be installed by changing the registry values. So, once again, you have to open "regedit.exe" as administrator - see the steps in the previous instructions - and then navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer". If you don't have a key named "Shell Icons", create it by right-clicking "Explorer", selecting "New" then selecting "Key", and naming it "Shell Icons". After that, while in "Shell Icons", in the right pane, create these strings (if you don't have them), by right-clicking, selecting "New" and selecting "String": 3, 4, 29 and 34. Double click each of them to enter the path to the desired icons.

These numbers represent system variables, as follows: 3 and 4 are giving the default folder icon - you replace the path with "<where you have this file>\fallout_custom folder.ico", 29 establishes the shortcut overlay icon for your shortcuts, so you replace the path with "<where you have this file>\fallout_shortcutS.ico", and, finally, 34 is the desktop icon - replace the path with "<where you have this file>\fallout_desktop.ico".

You may have to put the entire path of the file in quotes, at the end and at the beginning. Close the Registry Editor, and restart your Windows Explorer (open Task Manager, right click Windows Explorer, and select "Restart").

It might be necessary to delete your icon cache as well, and you can do that by deleting the "iconcache.db" file, situated in "user\<your_user_name>\AppData\Local\" folder, and also all the "iconcache_*.db" files situated in "user\<your_user_name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer" folder.

The rest of the icons can be changed by simply modifying the desktop icons in the "Personalization" menu.

        The Log on Screen Wallpaper:

This is the image displayed when you are logging on to windows, and it's also the Lock Screen wallpaper. Changing the default Lock Screen wallpaper is pretty similar in Windows 8, 10 and 11, but it's a bit more complicated for Windows 7.

To change the Lock Screen in Windows 10 and 11, you must go to Settings --> Personalization --> Lock Screen. Here you choose your image .

For Windows 7, first you must open "regedit.exe" as administrator (see previous instructions), and navigate to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background". In the right pane, double click "OEMBackground" and change its value to 1. Close the Registry Editor. Next, in your Windows Explorer, go to "<your system drive letter>:\windows\system32\oobe" and create a folder named "info", and, inside it, a subfolder called "backgrounds". Copy your desired image here, and rename it "backgroundDefault.jpg".

The logon wallpaper comes in two resolutions, 3840x1200 px and 1920x1080 px.

If you do not want your Log on wallpaper to be blured (it is by default), Open "regedit.exe", go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows", right click on "Windows" and make a new key named "System". Right click on "System", select "New > DWORD (32-bit)" and add a Value named "DisableAcrylicBackgroundOnLogo". Double-click the DWORD you created and then change the "Value Data" from "0" to "1".

        The Desktop Wallpaper:

It's the main desktop background. Changing the default wallpaper to the new one is pretty straightforward, but the steps you must take depend on your version of Windows.

The wallpaper comes in two (almost) identical versions with two resolutions, 3840x120o px and 1920x1080 px.

        The Sillypapers:

These are a bunch of silly bonus wallpapers, based on the game. If you're the "funny type", you can set them as a Desktop Slideshow (in "Settings --> Personalization --> Background" change it to "Slideshow" and select the folder).

Just like the rest of the wallpapers, these images are coming in two resolutions, 3840x1200 px and 1920x1800 px. Just delete those with the "wrong" resolution.

The Windows Start and Windows End sounds:

These sounds are to replace the default Windows Start and End sounds. Although easy to install on Windows 7, 8 and 10 (Just open the "Sounds Settings", go to "Windows Sounds" and replace the desired sounds), it gets a bit more complicated for Windows 11 (just google it, there are plenty of tutorials out there).
